We are dedicated to connecting people who need life-saving blood with generous volunteers who give. Operating 4 donor centers and conducting dozens of blood drives each month, we are proud to be an independent nonprofit that supplies over 20 area hospitals and clinics with life-saving blood—from our community, for our community.

Responsibilities

Summary:

This position will be focused on automation collections of double red cells and Auto-C plasmapheresis in addition to helping draw whole blood as needed.  Must be accurate in documenting, taking blood samples, working with blood donors and staff, and ensuring compliance with quality assurance standards, cGMP, SOP’s, and regulatory standards. Maintains a professional appearance and attitude while ensuring excellent customer service.

Schedule:  Variable schedule: Mon - Sat, may be scheduled between 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Must be courteous, conscientious, and professional when dealing with both internal and external customers.  Donors are treated with respect, courtesy and attention.  Promotes teamwork and communication internally and externally. Fosters team spirit to facilitate smooth, effective management of donation events.   Demonstrates dependability, punctuality, and cooperation.  
  2. Demonstrates a complete understanding of established policies and procedures within the department, as outlined in the procedure manual, to ensure that the blood supply is safe, pure, and potent.  Follows established procedures during performance of job tasks.  Complies with safety procedures, personnel practices, and confidentiality policies.
  3. Accepts responsibility and accountability for own performance and that of others.
  4. Recognizes responsibility in eliminating discarded units due to documentation errors or failure to adhere to SOPs.  Responds positively to management direction.  Uses knowledge/training based good judgment in the performance of job responsibilities.
  5. Ensures that all quality control procedures are performed and found to be acceptable before donors are drawn.
  6. Works independently to efficiently and effectively perform donor physical assessment procedures.  Documents results concurrent with performance on the Donor Medical Record.   
  7. Works independently to efficiently and effectively perform donor phlebotomies using aseptic methods.  Identifies donor and labels collection bag and pilot tubes properly.
  8. Provides appropriate post-phlebotomy care to donor.
  9. Performs site review to ensure accuracy, acceptability, and completeness of all documentation to prevent loss of units.
  10. Appropriately uses and manages all equipment used in the collection of whole blood / apheresis to minimize cost of equipment maintenance and repair.
  11. Assures a clean and orderly work area, including management of supplies to minimize waste.  Adheres to safety guidelines to assure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  12. Maintains composure in the work place and manages conflicts appropriately to ensure that the department runs efficiently and smoothly, resolving conflict before it becomes detrimental to the quality of work.
  13. Serves as a role model for new employees to ensure their performance meets all standards and regulatory requirements.  Demonstrates good customer service skills in both donor and co-worker relations.
  14. Works in whole blood collections area to remain competent and help out in times of need.
  15. Performs other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: 

HS Diploma or equivalent

Completion of double red cell training at blood bank or other health-care facility

 

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of experience or the equivalent

 

Licenses:

Valid driver’s license

Phlebotomy certification preferred

 

Physical Demands: 

Required to regularly stand, use hands, reach with arm, talk and hear. Frequently required to sit, stoop, crouch, and kneel. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

Other:

CPR certification preferred
